What, whence and why is sin?
How is it that we so easily fall in?
God‘s view may differ from our own ideas
Undermine, perhaps, our deeper fears

God may get royally annoyed at us from time to time
but, metaphorically, God‘s skin is thick,
Her shoulders are broad, His hugs are warm,
Her tears are sweet, and His love and mercy are deep, eternal.

God absorbs the tantrums, violence, and grief that we throw at Him.
God‘s response is not to lash out at us, in anger, wrath, retribution
but instead to woo and nurture us back into a right relationship.

God may allow us to fall flat on our faces
and to experience the consequences of our wayward actions,
but that doesn‘t mean that God intends punishment,
merely, and eventually, re-education.
That‘s love. Isn‘t it!

But what is "sin"?
Surely our failure to heed that guiding hand
Our deafness to the voice of love,
Our focus on self-gratification
our own need above all else
despite its effect
on others.

Surely our failure to reconsider
to imagine how we might view our deeds
in future years, reviewing what we have done;
to act without consideration for our self-worth;
yet also to act focused only on self-worth
ignoring our effect on others.

The potential for good and evil lies within us all.
Each has the option where in that spectrum to reside.
how to respond to the attractions of each pole.
However, the medieval concept of original sin
can be seen as a cunning clerical connivence
to maximise congregational obedience.

As the Bible tells us
we always have the option
to eat or to reject the offered apple.
